Since 2015, Someone’s Daughter, Inc. has provided S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities to our youth. Young women, especially young women of color and those living in urban communities, continue to be underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. The shortage of female representation in S.T.E.A.M is not because females are incapable or lacking the ability to succeed in these fields. The gender disparity in the fields of S.T.E.A.M is attributed to many factors including lack of mentors, lack of role models, lack of exposure to such fields, and lack of awareness about what these fields offer in terms of educational and career opportunities. Our S.T.E.A.M youth educational program, provided at no cost, aims to address the gender disparity in the fields of S.T.E.A.M by mentoring and providing positive role models to our youth, exposing them to S.T.E.A.M activities, and making them aware about the educational and career opportunities associated with the fields of S.T.E.A.M.

Our instructors, following a S.T.E.A.M approved curriculum, deliver S.T.E.A.M-oriented instructions through project-based learning methods. Instructors establish clear objectives for all lessons, curricular units, and projects and then communicate these objectives to the students. Our students hear from S.T.E.A.M professionals and participate in hands-on interactive workshops to learn new skills such as robotics, digital music engineering, coding, and chemistry. These opportunities increase our student’s curiosity in science, technology, engineering, art, and math, expose our students to potential educational and career opportunities in the fields of S.T.E.A.M. and help to increase their overall S.T.E.A.M literacy.

Some of the expected outcomes for youth participating in our “S.T.E.A.M” program includes:

  • Demonstrate to youth the relevance and importance of science, technology, engineering, art and math in everyday life.
  • Increase S.T.E.A.M literacy for all youth participants, including those who do not pursue S.T.E.A.M-related careers or additional study in the S.T.E.A.M field.
  • Increase the number of youth who ultimately pursue advanced degrees and careers in S.T.E.A.M fields and broaden the participation of women and minorities in those fields.
  • Enhance the social, educational, emotional, physical and recreational functioning of middle and high school-aged youth through the implementation of S.T.E.A.M activities.
